A few months ago, I sat at my desk, staring at a blinking cursor on a Google Doc. I was proofreading an article that had dropped on my desk.  

The client wanted something fresh—a blog post that informed but also connected. In the end, they decided to write the copy themselves considering their budget.

I had just finished running my eyes over it. It looked great on paper; albeit, missed structure at first glance. As I read on a few things stood out – one thing in particular – it missed the human touch.

It missed that spark of the deep connection and subtle touch of human experience which makes a reader smile or nod or think, “Oh I can resonate with this.” That little piece of soul that only humans can slip between the lines.

It was clear that the copy was AI-generated.

Don't get me wrong, artificial intelligence (AI) is incredible. It can speed up research, brainstorm headlines, structure ideas, and increase efficiency. But we lose the magic that the human touch can bring. We lose our creative thinking and essence of why content matters.

The reality is that AI is a supportive tool – not a storyteller.

How to balance using AI with human authenticity

How many times have you come across a blog, an article, or text in a book that has grasped your attention and created a strong feeling from within?

When you're using AI to generate content, sit back, take that piece to the drawing board, and carefully think about building the story you wish to tell. How can you add the little details that seem insignificant but make a reader feel something?  For example, you might write something reminding the reader of how they stumbled through their first cold pitch with sweaty palms.

If you’re worrying about algorithms, then worry not. Algorithms may increase visibility, but emotions and connections drive conversations.

TIP: When you use AI, treat it like an assistant there to make your job easier and more efficient.

A few steps you can apply to bring your content to life are:

• Bring your tone of voice and personality into the content. Is the tone formal, informal, light-hearted, and conversational?

• Bring an essence of your values into it.

• Build a story that will connect with the hearts of your consumers.

• Use simple, understandable words.

• Put yourselves in your customers' shoes and consider your connections with them.

• Have fun with it!

Using AI ethically

Let’s not forget the ethical responsibility that comes with AI. No doubt there are ongoing debates about the drawbacks of the use of AI when it comes to ethical issues and plagiarism.

While AI can be helpful in many ways and be your wingman, you need to remember that it generates content based on preexisting content.

A few steps you can apply when using AI to be ethical is to focus on the following:

• Fact-check everything by researching information for relevant, up-to-date information.

• Infuse originality into the content with your own words.

• Use AI as a helpful guide.

• Triple-check and proof all elements of the copy.
